SUD AMERICA – FROM URUGUAY´S PERSPECTIVE

Uruguay, and in particular people in the beach city of Punta del Este, are calling attention to the Old World-centric geographical prejudice that places the world reference frames with the northern hemisphere being up. In contrast, they show the map of Sud America rotated one-hundred and eighty degrees.

Colombia is way down to the south, and Ushuaia in the Argentina horn lies in the extreme north. They turn the globe upside down. Or more importantly, they argue that there is no “up” in space and the geographers of Europe short-changed the southern hemisphere.

So it is not even a matter of reversing the globe, showing the South America perception is equally correct. Russia and China are down-under, and Antarctica is the top of the world. The poles are arbitrary for zenith and nadir, and the Earth looks rather different to the people in Uruguay looking down upon the rest of the countries. One cannot fault their perspective.
